Lijiang pony — very small, compact mountain breed of horses from the highland areas of northwestern Yunnan (Lijiang). One of the smallest horse breeds in China. Height at withers 100–120 cm (ideal 106–112 cm), weight 140–220 kg, body length 130–150 cm, chest girth 130–145 cm, cannon bone circumference 14–16.5 cm. Build strong, harmonious, wide and deep with well-developed musculature and strong bone structure. Head relatively large, forehead broad slightly convex, muzzle short and wide, profile straight or slightly concave. Ears small, erect, 90–120 mm long. Eyes large, dark brown. Nostrils large. Vibrissae long, up to 80–100 mm. Neck short, muscular, 45–55 cm long. Back short, 55–65 cm. Limbs short and strong. Hooves strong, 65–80 mm high at the toe. Tail low-set, 70–90 cm long. Coat double, very dense, long in winter (40–50 mm on the body, up to 80–100 mm on the neck and thighs). Acceptable colors: bay, dark bay, brown, mouse-gray, roan, rarely chestnut and gray. Small white markings are allowed; pinto is disqualifying. Format index 1.25–1.30, chest depth ≥55–58% of height at withers. Differs from the basic domestic horse by its extremely small size while maintaining proportions and strength, more compact body, short back, wide chest, and especially dense, long winter coat compared to other Chinese mountain ponies.
