The “Dog” archetype

Cultural context

Nearly every culture has made room for the dog. It guarded farmsteads, herded flocks, ran beside hunters and slept by the fire, and over thousands of years became the animal people trust to stand at the door. Stories cast it as the hero's companion or the watchman who senses ill intent before anyone else does. Even where it is not sacred, the dog is shorthand for devotion: the one who waits at the gate, follows into the storm and forgives a harsh word by morning. Its loyalty and its capacity to bite sit uneasily side by side, and people have always known both.

Scales

Seen through its temperament, the dog is quick of mind and curious about whatever is new, with stamina that outlasts most. It has no appetite for rank or show; a bowl, a warm corner and its people are enough. It plays and clowns readily, gives of itself even when tired, and is patient with the slow and the small. Yet a streak of independence keeps it from dissolving into the crowd, and it will refuse to follow the pack when the pack is wrong. That mix of softness, endurance and stubborn selfhood makes it a companion rather than a mere servant.

Core traits

Loyalty is the keel of this archetype, the trait everything else hangs on. A dog-person turns up, stays when the weather turns, and carries others through bad stretches without keeping score. The shadow of that gift is a grip on the past: the old house, the old routine and the old friends are hard to leave, and new surroundings can feel like betrayal. Such people also tend to forget themselves. They will go hungry to see everyone else fed, and notice their own exhaustion only when it is too late to hide.

Strong traits

Courage, protectiveness and kindness make the dog dependable, and each comes at a price. Courage steps in front of danger without measuring it, and can harden into plain stubbornness once the dog has decided. Protectiveness hears every footstep on the porch, but left alone it turns into watching over people so closely that they feel fenced in, and into suspicion of every stranger. Kindness forgives easily and warms a room, yet it forgets its own limits, invites those who would take advantage, and can end in the quiet burnout of someone who always said yes.

Noticeable traits

Quieter, but still audible, are aggression and a weak will. Aggression is what shows teeth when a boundary is crossed; without discipline it spills into quarrels that are hard to mend afterward. The weak will works the other way, smoothing things over and adapting to whatever the household decides. That spares many pointless arguments, though over the years it can leave the dog without goals of its own, waiting for somebody else to choose the walk, the route and the mood of the day.

Muted traits

Greed is the faintest of the dog's traits, more a squirrelling instinct than a vice: the bone buried for a lean day, the fierce guarding of the food bowl. It is a form of foresight, and it keeps the pantry full. In hard times, however, it tightens the jaw, and sharing with even beloved people comes grudgingly. It never rules the dog, but it surfaces exactly when things feel scarce, and then even a generous soul can look stingy.

How to be around

How do you treat a dog? Be the calm, steady leader it is looking for, and show it through plain habits: the same words, the same hours, a promise kept. Then its courage and warmth go into guarding your shared home rather than testing you. Give it a corner of its own and duties it can be proud of, and it will repay you with devotion. If it senses wavering, it will test you.

With a woman

A woman-dog hates being managed and loves being needed, so leave her caretaking to her. When she insists on walking you to the car or calling to check that you got home, answer cheerfully instead of waving it away. Then, once a week, send her out for an hour on her own, to a bench or a café, anywhere without errands. Finally, say aloud what she does for the people around her; her loyalty rarely asks for thanks, which is exactly why she warms to it.

With a man

A man-dog guards his territory as seriously as a night watchman. Tell him in advance who is coming and when the house will be empty, and he will relax. Ask for help in one clear sentence with a task attached, such as hauling the shelves or driving to the airport, and he will do it properly. Praise the result in front of others.

With a teenage boy

A teenage boy-pup wants to be brave before witnesses. Hand him a real job: walking the neighbour's dog, carrying the heavy bags, being the one who locks up. When he is about to do something rash, ask what he would tell his best friend in the same spot, then stay quiet long enough for him to answer. Talk about the risky stunts afterwards, over food, as equals.

With a teenage girl

A teenage girl-pup is generous to a fault and often says yes when she means no. Notice when she goes silent at a family gathering and ask her something small and specific, like which song she would pick. Let her hear that you saw the favours she did for friends. If she apologises for things that are not her fault, tell her calmly that her feelings count as much as anyone's.

With a child

A child-pup learns trust through play, so roll on the floor, race to the corner, build the blanket fort. When another kid frightens him, sit down beside him first and ask what happened before you say what to do. Praise the exact thing he did: "you shared your sandwich with Sam." Then stay within earshot while he handles his playmates without you.

With an animal

The animal itself, a four-legged dog, needs a post: a mat by the door that is only its own, and a job such as bringing the slipper or finding a hidden toy. Keep walks and meals on a steady clock, since a dog that knows what comes next stops inventing threats. If it growls at a visitor, calmly lead it to its mat instead of scolding.

After a quarrel

To quarrel with a dog or get under its skin, show weakness where it expects a leader, change your story halfway through, and threaten anyone it counts as its own. A woman-dog bristles when her care is treated as an obligation, a man-dog when someone overrules him mid-task. A teen boy-pup flares at mockery of his courage, a teen girl-pup when her kindness is used against her. The child-pup is wounded by a broken promise, and the animal itself by a stranger on its doorstep or a feeding hour that keeps moving. Do all this and the sweetest dog shows the teeth you forgot it had.

How to befriend

To befriend a dog or win it over, be consistent and honest: it gravitates to people whose words do not shift. Offer a woman-dog a share in looking after those she loves, and a man-dog a joint project with visible results, like a fence mended together. The boy-pup in his teens warms to being trusted with something that could go wrong; the girl-pup to a listener who never hurries her. For the child-pup, a game that repeats is gold, and a real dog needs rituals, a treat from your hand and your scent in the house. Given time, it decides you belong to its pack.
